Centurion TSC was founded in 2001 by Les Gay and Denise Wiggins, who had set up and run the junior section of another club in the Camberley area from 1997-2000. However, the air range was demolished by a developer, who had bought the site, and so it was necessary to find alternative accommodation.
Fortunately, at that time, the Lord Roberts Centre was being built for smallbore and airgun events to be held during the 2002 Commonwealth Games. The NSRA were approached and in September 2001 Centurion TSC was born.
2001 -The first session was attended by seven youngsters and the numbers grew by the week, so by Christmas the club needed to open on two evenings a week instead of just the one.
2002 - We were approached by a local prep school with a view to incorporating some of the pupils into the club. As the two sessions were already full we could not absorb this input and advised the master on other clubs he could approach. He came back several weeks later reporting that no clubs were willing to take them. At that stage we agreed to let them join after the summer holidays. So in September 2002 Centurion opened up for an extra night, making it three nights a week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
2003 - Denise left the club to pursue her other passion, sailing, and after a few months interlude Anne Davis “temporarily” took over the role of secretary, after being re-elected and 6 years later she is still in the post.
2004/5 - as the membership increased, and the school were bringing more pupils, time and space ran out. It was decided to go our separate ways, with the school creating their own club and staying on the original range.
2005 - Centurion moved downstairs to the new (and current) range that Centurion club members had built and funded. Centurion ran their first 6yd "open" competition, during the 2005 British open Airgun Championship weekend, which was entered by club members and the previously mentioned school and was a great success.
2006 to date - Centurion members continue to successfully compete in Open Competitions both at home and Internationally along with core Postal competitions with membership of both juniors and adults thriving.
Les and Anne have held training weekends covering techniques, both theory and practical, and ran training day competitions on both paper and electronic targets, for which no time is available to commit on club nights. These also were a great success.
In March 2005 Centurion applied for and was granted Home Office Approval and have built up kit for members to use when they are experienced enough to train for and compete in smallbore competitions.
