The first competition that members experience is amongst themselves using the postal format i.e. shooting competition cards, signing them and having them witnessed. They are then “sent away” for scoring and and one or two weeks later the results are posted. Competition conditions are usually 20 shots (4 cards) per round, and 6 rounds at 1 per fortnight. This is to prepare members for the “real thing”.
The Dorset League runs two competitions per year, 8 rounds @ 30 shots per round, two rounds per month and is the primary competition that our members compete in, with great success. Members have won many prizes (medals) and for some it is the first thing they have ever won.
Members will start to acquire their own equipment and progress on to 10mtrs enabling them to compete in “open” competitions. This can be a daunting experience as you may be stood next to a British, European, Commonwealth or Paralympic Champion on the other hand it may be someone you are in direct competition with, i.e. someone in the same class as yourself. Despite this, because members are properly prepared, as far as practical, they cope very well and some come away with prizes, cup and trophies, but all come away with the experience and usually a massive smile.
Centurion actively promote the following open competitions:
Middlesex – Held at the end of September
Welsh – Held at the beginning of November
Surrey – End of November
And The British Championship Meeting in February.
These are all held at the Lord Roberts Centre, with the exception of the Welsh, which takes place in Cardiff.
